The ACUADS Newsletter is an ad hoc publication from the Australian Council of University Art and Design Schools. It aims to communicate information about activities of the Council Executive, research interests and events and activities related to the visual art and design sector.

1. ACUADS Executive Meeting
The ACUADS Executive Meeting was held at the VCA on 6 August 2004 considered the following agenda items:
- ACUADS 2004 Conference – see below
- The Australian Newspaper Supplement – 11 August 2004
- ACUADS Distinguished Teaching and Research Awards – nominations considered. Winners to be announced at the Conference dinner.
- ACUADS AGM – confirmed for the 24 September 2004 in Canberra.
Draft minutes have been circulated to all Heads of Schools.
The next Executive Committee meeting is scheduled for 23 September 2004 at the ANU School of Art.
2. ACUADS 2004 Annual Conference

3. The Australian Newspaper Higher Education Supplement
The ACUADS Supplement was successfully published in the Australian Newspaper on 11 August 2004. The theme of this year’s supplement was aligned with the theme of the ACUADS Conference – ART & DESIGN New Visions, New Policies, New Opportunities.
Thanks to all the institutions who contributed advertising, editorial and photographs. Without ACUADS member support this initiative would not be possible.
4. CHASS – ‘Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences on the Hill’
As agreed by the Executive Committee, ACUADS joined CHASS as a Foundation member. This entitles ACUADS to full voting rights on the Council.
In addition, several representatives attended ‘HASS on the Hill’ in June 2004. This event coincided with the formation of CHASS and provided an opportunity for a range of representations directly to Federal Parliamentarians.

Trompe l’Oeil
Tromp l’Oeil is a joint initiative by the University of South Australia (South Australian School of Art) and Nexus Multicultural Arts Centre in Adelaide. This one-day symposium is an opportunity for art educators in the fields of secondary, tertiary and community visual arts to meet, converse and engage with a spectrum of issues concerning cultural diversity and art education.

Rhapsody 21
University of Tasmania, Academy of the Arts, Launceston
Rhapsody 21 – the future of University Museums and Art Galleries in the New Century will be conducted in Launceston, Tasmania May 25-28, 2005. This conference examines the character, management and place of the museum and art gallery in the work of the modern-day university.

NAVA Online Forum: Who will speak Truth to Power?
From 23 August to 10 September 2004 , the National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA) will be holding an online forum. Twelve high profile people have been commissioned from within and outside the arts to write papers on current issues of identity, place and politics and the artists’ role in contemporary Australia.

Design Education: Tradition and Modernity
Scheduled for 2-4 March 2005 in Ahmedabad, India.
Bringing together people from the academic community, design researchers and design professionals to consider the emerging issues relating to design education in the context of changing paradigms and globalization, this conference will the first of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region. Journeys: Migrating Australian Art Education
The National Conference of the Australian Institute of Art Educators in affiliation with the Queensland Art Teachers’ Association will be held at Griffith University on 25-28 September 2004. Papers with a general theme of ‘research’ are now being called for – closing date 30 June 2004.
Contributors are asked to explore the following themes:

6. News and Information
Talente
Talente is an international competition for young makers in crafts, design and technology supported by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour and the Bavarian State Ministry of Economics, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology. An initiative of the Visual Arts and Crafts Board of the Australia Council, and managed by JamFactory Contemporary Craft and Design, the aim of this competition is to build connections and reputation of Australian makers in the European arena.

Cultural Diversity Design Competition
UNESCO has launched its Cultural Diversity Design Contest 2004 with the theme of “Mealtime”. The aim of this contest is to give to the prize winners the logistical and promotional support for the realization of prototypes by active members of the Ateliers Art de France(craftspeople and small French crafts enterprises). Closing date for applications is 26 November 2004 and selections will be determined in December.
